ExCeL London’s management team takes great pride in having one of the greenest and most energy efficient exhibition centres in the world. In such an environment as a bulk food store, where spontaneous ignition is possible, it was essential to select a food product safe luminaire that would avoid dust build up and comply with food regulations. Aiming to reduce energy consumption and improve visibility within the plant, the company recently replaced 114 of its 400W metal halide lighting fixtures with Dialight’s DuroSite LED High Bays. Consuming just 123W, the Dialight High Bays have enabled the company to slash energy consumption and dramatically improve visibility, all while making the work environment more comfortable and safer for employees. The company has been so impressed with the results, it’s now considering an upgrade to Dialight fixtures at other areas within the mill premise.
The 164 metal halide lamps were replaced one-for-one with Dialight’s DuroSite® LED High Bays each drawing only 171W to deliver an immediate cut in energy use and CO2 emissions of 64%. The LED high bays carry a five-year continuous performance warranty and are L70 rated for 100,000 hours, so maintenance is eliminated. Additionally the LEDs’ low operating temperature avoids the problem of dust accumulation on the lens and consequent variation in colour. As sealed fittings with no end-of-life failures, there is no risk that parts can fall into the production line to contaminate product or cause a fire hazard and with no UV output they will not cause discolouration of product.

The oval pattern of the arrays also means less wasted light on racking and more directed at floor level in the aisles where 110 lux was measured under the HPS, which had dimmed over time, increasing to 221 lux after the installation of the LED High Bays. Tom Klimes comments: “We’ve removed the maintenance burden by fitting LED lighting, as these High Bays are warranted for five years of continuous performance and you can expect them to last ten or more if they’re not in use 24/7.
Martisa is now enjoying the immediate benefits of 69% reduction in lighting energy use and reduced carbon emissions from solid-state LED High Bays that suffer no flickering or dimming effect from the amount of energy being pumped by the machinery. The lux level is now steady at 200 at floor level, giving improved and consistent colour rendition, while the LEDs’ instant-on ability means that there is no re-strike delay following power outages. Mounted at a height of 12 ms, the metal halide high bays were replaced one-for-one with Dialight DuroSite® 150W LED High Bays. Significantly this led to the discovery that the actual consumption of the LED High Bay lights including drivers was 5-10% less than the expected 150W – an additional energy saving bonus while maintaining the same light level but immediately reducing energy usage by over 68%. At the Johnson Underground facility, the company replaced all 268 MH fixtures with new 150W Dialight LED High Bays in a 1-to-1 replacement.
